Designed by chief engineer Joseph Strauss along with Irving Morrow and Charles Ellis, the Golden Gate Bridge officially opened on May 27, 1937. Prior to its completion, the only practical way to travel across the Golden Gate Strait between San Francisco and Marin County was via ferryboat.
Despite heavy skepticism from critics who believed construction was impossible due to fierce ocean currents, blinding fog, and strong winds, the 1.7-mile suspension bridge was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Its signature "International Orange" color was selected by architect Irving Morrow to enhance visibility in dense fog and blend harmoniously with the surrounding coastal natural landscape.
